Origin of the term 'POSH' or Port Out - Starboard Home. . .

This is supposed to be the legend that was printed on the tickets of passengers on P&O (Peninsular and Orient) passenger vessels when travelling between the UK and India back in the days of the Raj. Britain and India are both in the northern hemisphere so the port side (left-hand) berths were mostly in the shade (or cooler and with better views!) when travelling out (easterly) and so too were the starboard side berths when coming back. So there it is!
